Hoist the sails to the tropical paradise of Tahiti, but don’t expect to laze under the coconut trees. More than just white sandy beaches, Didier Destremau presents an exciting and lesser-known historical tale in ‘Jours de guerre à Tahiti’ (Days of War in Tahiti).
In 1914, Admiral von Spee and his German fleet set course for Tahiti to replenish their supplies of food and coal. While the world is engulfed in the Great War, the island appears defenseless, but that’s without considering the courage of Commander Maxime Destremau and his troops. In an unexpected confrontation between local economic interests and the necessity to fight, this war narrative tells the story of a conflict that pits civil and military power against each other.
