Prague is a place that never truly lets you go.
As Kafka once said, ‘the little mother has claws’ and once you fall in love with this city, you’re bound to it forever. Tom Mairs’ watercolors capture that bond—the misty streets, towering spires, and the soul of a city that both embraces and haunts you. His paintings draw you into the city’s heart, where history merges with everyday life, and every corner seems to whisper a story. Of Czech origin, Jaroslav Kalfař immigrated to the United States at the age of 15 without knowing a single word of English. Unable to keep up in high school, he dropped out and taught himself English.
A few years later, he was admitted to the prestigious New York University, where his professor, author Jonathan Safran Foer, encouraged him to write.
Holding an MFA (Master of Fine Arts), he writes in English and lives in Brooklyn.
Spaceman of Bohemia (2017) is his debut novel.
Tom Mairs (b. 1986, Canada) is an artist whose evocative watercolors intertwine architecture, travel, and history. He holds a master’s degree in scenography from the Kunsthochschule Weißensee Berlin and has since devoted his career to capturing the dynamic interplay between people, structures, and objects. Through his use of watercolors, Mairs brings to life the dynamic relationships within urban and rural landscapes.
