Originally from the Czech Republic, Jaroslav Kalfar emigrated to the United States as a teenager, unable to speak a word of English. Unable to keep up in middle school, he dropped out and taught himself the language. A few years later, he enrolled at the prestigious New York University, where his professor, writer Jonathan Safran Foer, encouraged him to write. He holds an MFA (Master of Fine Arts), writes in English, and lives in Brooklyn. His first novel, An Astronaut in Bohemia (2017), has been translated into more than 15 languages and adapted for film, with Adam Sandler in the lead role.
He is the author of Prague Sketchbook, published by Éditions du Pacifique.
